Springfield Model 1863

Springfield Model 1863

1863 Parts diagram

The Springfield Model 1863 rifled musket is essentially a Springfield Model 1861 with several minor adjustments. These adjustments include redesigned barrel bands, a new ramrod, a case-hardened lock, a new hammer, and a redesigned bolster (percussion chamber). Several of these modifications were based upon Colt's contract model 1861, known as the "Colt special".

The Model 1863, as designated by the Springfield Armory, was actually manufactured in larger numbers (over a half-million) than the Model 1861. However, many histories of the United States Civil War incorporate the later model as a derivative of the Model 1861, thus stating that the latter was the most commonly used longarm in the conflict.
